The invitation

“A privilege,” not a booking

In June 2022 he was invited back to Cars & Cigars, the charity show in Detroit. The day after, he called it “a tremendous and successful event,” and thanked the Celani family and the Fuente family by name — Carlos Fuente Jr., Cynthia Fuente Suarez and Carlos Fuente III — for the invitation.

The night

A jazz orchestra and an auction

The night ran in an arena with a jazz orchestra on stage and a charity auction — one lot was a blind pick of rare three-liter bottles of wine — while guests in jackets stood with cigars in front of the bandstand. On stage, in front of the orchestra, guests held their cigars up for the photograph.

It had started the evening before at a garden pre-party: “Pre-Celebration Cars & Cigars Show 2022,” he wrote; “these pics can say more than I can say.” And he was already looking ahead: “Next stop SC for a private event.”
