Private parties

Somebody’s back garden, and one of about twenty-eight people in the world who can do this.

That is a Saturday evening in August. He set the table up on the lawn and rolled until the light went, and everybody there went home with a cigar he made for them.

Where these have been

A stadium car park. A racetrack. Somebody’s back garden.

Six places, and not one of them is a ballroom. He has set the same table up beside an RV in a football car park and on a red carpet in a white dinner jacket, and it is the same table.

How the evening goes

Nothing at a party for fifty is on a schedule. His table is where people end up.

A party for fifty people has no running order — no speeches to sit through, no dancing anybody organized, nothing on a schedule. There are people standing around with a drink and nowhere in particular to go. The table gives them a where.

The band

Everything else at the party is for everybody. This has one name on it.

A green and gold cigar band with a crest and a monogram, printed for one of his events
A band printed for one of his events
One of his cigars with the blue Hublot band, in front of the watches on display
A band printed for a brand

He rolls the cigar in front of your guest, so the band it carries is the only one it will ever have — a name, a number, and a date. Seventy. Thirty years on the force. The last day of a career that nobody wanted to end with a plaque.

At a wedding it is the guest who keeps the band. Here it is the person the whole party was for, because it is the only thing in the room that had their name printed on it.

If you have a date in mind, that is the only thing he needs to know today.

What he needs, and when he comes

A table, and the patio.

Six feet of table and somewhere with air. Everything that goes on it travels with him, and he has worked a whole afternoon under a pop-up gazebo from a hardware shop.

  1. 01

    While people are arriving

Half the guests do not know the other half yet. The table gives the early ones something to do that is not their phone.

  2. 02

After the cake, or the toast

The only fixed point of the evening has just happened and the room needs somewhere to move to.

  3. 03

    At the end

Whoever is still there at midnight is family. They stay longer with something to stand around.

They all reach for the same word.

Family. Eight of them reach for it, eight years apart, written by people who had known him for an hour.

Franklin sat down with my wife and I and enjoyed a cigar with us. He treated us like family and gave us hugs on our way out. Papo is the real deal with a heart of gold and a sense of humor that can make anyone laugh.

Before they book

What hosts ask.

One cigar per guest is how he sizes an evening, and fifty is a good one — everybody gets to the table without a queue.
Most of these are private houses. A garden, a deck or a driveway all work.
Six feet of table is all he sets up, and he has worked in tighter.
They stand at the table anyway, and most take one home for somebody. Watching it made is the part people describe afterwards.
As long as you book him for. He arrives before your first guest and packs up after the last cigar.
Yes. It is settled when you book, along with the artwork.

Tell him the date. He will tell you today whether it is his.
